10% to 20% chance that an earthquake of equivalent intensity could occur in the next week, predicts the MeT agency.

A 7.6 magnitude earthquake and several aftershocks thereafter devastated Japan on 1 January.

Several households destroyed in Suzu, near the quake epicenter.  The forecast of heavy rain raises concerns about landslides.

Over 33,000 people have evacuated and some areas lack access to water, electricity, and food. The government has opened a sea route for aid delivery.

"It's been over 40 hours since the initial quake. This is a battle against time, and I believe now is a crucial moment in that battle," 

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said at a news conference held after a national disaster response meeting.
