Born in Ciudad Acuña, Mexico, Canto grew up in Del Rio, Texas, initially pursuing a career in music.

He made his American acting debut in 2013 with the Fox series "The Following," alongside Kevin Bacon.

Canto portrayed the mutant Sunspot in the 2014 film "X-Men: Days of Future Past."

In 2016, he joined "Designated Survivor" as Vice President Aaron Shore, working alongside Kiefer Sutherland.

Apart from acting, Canto directed short films, including "Before Tomorrow" in 2014.

Recent notable work includes starring in "The Cleaning Lady," with season 3 in production at the time of his death.
